PEG Tube Placement (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy) is a procedure in which a feeding tube is placed through the abdominal wall and into the stomach.
Bypassing the mouth and esophagus, by using PEG; nutrition, fluids and/or medications can be put directly into the stomach.
An endoscope is used to guide the creation of a small opening through the skin of the upper abdomen and directly into the stomach.
This procedure allows placing a feeding tube into the stomach. An antibiotic is given by vein prior to the procedure because patients generally feel an intravenous sedative and local anesthesia.
Patients having difficulties with swallowing, appetite, taking adequate nutrition through the mouth can benefit from this procedure.
A few patients can eat or drink after a PEG procedure upon doctor’s advice but not all the patients. Liquid nutrition and fluids are given through the PEG tube. If the tube is placed because of swallowing difficulty the patient still can’t take an oral intake.

Depending upon the patient’s nature of conditions, these tubes can last for months or even years. And might need to be replaced if are used over an extended period of time. PEG tubes can be removed easily and a new tube can be placed, if the replacement is required.
