Flexible sigmoidoscopy is a method in which a medical expert uses a flexible, tight tube called a sigmoidoscope, to glimpse inside your rectum and lower colon.

HOW FLEXIBLE SIGMOIDOSCOPY IS PERFORMED?

 

Sigmoidoscope is inserted into the patient’s anus and slowly guided to the rectum and into the sigmoid colon.

The scope pumps air into the large intestine for the better view. The camera shows an image of intestinal lining allowing to examine the tissues lining the patient’s sigmoid colon and rectum.

The patient may be asked to move several times for the adjustments.

 

WHAT SHOULD THE PATIENT EXPECT AFTER A FLEXIBLE SIGMOIDOSCOPY?

After a successful flexible sigmoidoscopy, following can be expected:

 

  • Cramping in the abdomen during the first hour after the procedure.
  • The patient may resume regular activities right away after the procedure.

 

WHAT RISKS ARE INVOLVED IN FLEXIBLE SIGMOIDOSCOPY?

The risks of a flexible sigmoidoscopy include:

  • Bleeding
  • Perforation
  • Abdomen pain

Bleeding and perforation are the most common complications. Bleeding occur if have polyps removed.
